The quarter of Rome where the most splendid “Palazzi” of the Roman period are located – Palazzo Farnese (which houses the French Embassy), Palazzo Spada (where the original statue of Pompey can be seen), Palazzo Braschi (now Museo di Roma), Palazzo della Cancelleria and the churches of San Carlo ai Catinari and Sant’Andrea della Valle – is one of the most fascinating area of the Eternal City. Here, close to piazza Campo dei Fiori, in piazza del Biscione, is Palazzo Orsini degli Anguillara. The name of the square derives from the italian “biscia”, which was the roman name for eel, because at that time the Orsini lived in the Anguillara county and “anguilla” is the modern Italian name for eel as well. Restaurant “Da Pancrazio” is built right here, over the ruins of Theatre of Pompey and it is one of the most original buildings in Rome. The original history is that Pompey wanted to give Rome a new theatre entirely built of marble after having seen a similar one in Mytilene, Greece. In front of the theatre Pompey built a large “Curia”, a meeting place for senators who wanted to discuss during the performances in order not to have to travel great distances to carry on with their political assemblies. It was in that same Curia that Julius Caesar was murdered by Brutus and Cassius on the Ides of March of 44 B.C. The preference that the romans always had for this theatre was not due to its capacity (which, according to the Vatican Code, accommodated only 27,580 spectators), but due to its precious decorations. Today, visiting the restaurant, anyone can examine the ruins of one of the most magnificient buildings in ancient Rome. The famous house specialities, the carefully chosen wines and the decorations of the premises make Da Pancrazio’s one of the most interesting places in Rome while its walls recaunt more than 2000 years history.
