Da Pancrazio, la storia (english)

The quarter of Rome where the most splendid “Palazzi” of the Roman period are located, for example: Palazzo Farnese (now the residence of the French Embassy), Palazzo Spada where nowdays the original statue of pompeus can be seen Palazzo Vidoni, Palazzo Braschi (now a museum), Palazzo della Camcelleria and the churches of San Carlo ai Catinari and Sant’Andrea della Valle is a particularly fascinating area of the Eternal City.

In this area, exactly on the same spot is the Palazzo of the Orsini degli Anguillara family located in Piazza del Biscione. The name derives from “biscia” which was the Roman name for eel, because at that time the Orsini family occupied the Anguillara country and Anguilla is the modern Italian name for eel, also they decorated their coat of arms with an eel. Adiacent to the roman Piazza di Campo de’ Fiori you can now find the restaurant ” Da Pancrazio” which is built on the ruins of Pompeus’ Ancient Theatre that us been transformed into one of the most original buildings in Italy.

The original History of the theatre are so well know that it is only necessary to refer to them briefly: – Pompeus wanted to give Rome an entirely new theatre built of marble after having seen a similar one in Mytilene, greece. In from of the theatre Pompeus built a large Curia where the senators could meet during the performances in order not to have to travel great distances to curry on with their political assemblies. It was in that same Curia that Julius Caesar was murdered by Brutus and Cassius. The preference that the romans always had for this theatre was not due to its capacity which according to the vatican code accommodated only 27,580 persons, but was due to the splendid decorations.

Today in the restaurant anyone can examine the ruins of one of the most magnificient buildings in ancient Rome. The famous kitchen specialities, the carefully chosen wines and the decorations of the premises make the restaurant one of the most interesting historic places in Rome while its walls recaunt more than 2000 years history.
